NCSU researchers, Virtual Heroes land $1.5M grant to get serious about games in high schools From WRAL's Local Tech Wire, Posted: Sep. 25, 2008 GRADUATE could take on a different meaning at North Carolina high schools in the near future if a project now under way proves successful.
Researchers at North Carolina State University are partnering with Research Triangle-based Virtual Heroes to develop a video game they believe will boost science and information technology skills among North Carolina high school students.
Funded by $1.5 million from the National Science Foundation, Virtual Heroes, NCSU’s College of Education and NCSU’s Kenan Institute are developing a videogame program called “Games Requiring Advanced Developmental Understanding and Achievement in Technological Endeavors.”

, News Services, (919) 515-6386 Oct. 29, 2008 A research team, led by North Carolina State University's Dr. Mitzi M. Montoya, has developed a new way of measuring how "real" online virtual worlds are – an important advance for the emerging technology that can be used to foster development of new training and collaboration applications by companies around the world. A global economy, the rising cost of travel, and increasingly tight budgets have left companies exploring the possible use of virtual worlds to train employees and foster collaboration in areas such as research and development, but until now no one has had a way to measure just how "real" those worlds are. The researchers focused on developing a measurement tool specifically for business applications in the virtual world, noting that the productivity and effectiveness of workers interacting via these online environments is closely linked to how well the workers are able to feel as if they are in the virtual realm. Dr. Michael Young, co-director of the DGRC, traveled to Austin, Texas on September 15 - 17, 2008, to staff an exhibit booth at the Austin Game Developers' Conference. The booth, hosted by Wake County Economic Development, described highlights of North Carolina as an east coast game industry hub. Dr. Young was present to describe the research and educational work being done at NCSU and to build new relationships with national and international game industry leaders.The Austin GDC is the second-largest games industry conference in the US, attended this year by over 3,000 games professionals. |
